Woodgraining Workshop

Watch a Slide presentation of Nicola Vigini producing a Pine Grain Finish

Woodgraining is such an important part of decorative painting. It is imperative for decorative painters and faux finishers to learn this classical technique. Using traditional methods of cork and burlap, participants in our workshops create authentic looking marquetry and parquetry panels of numerous types of wood.

This "faux bois" class will begin with exercises demonstrating the proper use of the different tools, such as floggers and mottlers.  All of the elements necessary to render realistic imitations including choosing proper base coats, analysis of wood structure, and accurate patterning will be covered.  Metallic base coats give a luminous quality to woods and our custom mixes of basecoats will enhance your knowledge of woodgrain.  The following woods will be featured:

  • European Oak

  • Satinwood

  • Walnut

  • Mahogany

  • Burl Walnut

  • Feathered Mahogany

  • Pine

  • Bird's eye Maple
