Beginner Classical Trompe l’Oeil

Our most popular workshop!

Pre-requisite: Intro to Faux, Designer Wall I, or teacher discretion

If you want to learn the basics of trompe l’oeil or need to freshen up your skills, this is the workshop for you.  This is a traditional workshop focusing on the principles of “fool of the eye”. It is designed to clarify a certain painting style and expand technical skills by practicing the fundamentals of grisaille, three-dimensional depth and illusion of architectural elements, and shadow and light.

The class begins with charcoal molding studies. The theory of shadow and light will be clearly demonstrated through essential brush exercises and enriched with an historical slide presentation of photos taken on many travels through Europe.

Students will complete four 2' x 18" panels on embedded and distressed backgrounds ranging from molding studies, a grisaille frieze, a capital, to a fully framed classical rosette.  A set of brushes is included.

History of Trompe l'Oeil
Wine cellar by Nicola Vigini

Trompe l'oeil is a centuries old European painting technique employing perspective, naturalism, and shading to create a three dimensional illusion. Trompe l'oeil is appreciated for its wit and style, and can also provide an ideal architectural solution for space where the actual material desired is either too costly or structurally unfeasible. Architectural moldings, vaulted ceilings, bas-relief, or columns, as well as more pictorial compositions, are all excellent themes for trompe l'oeil. Trompe l'oeil techniques lend themselves to any style, from the classical to the more minimal and modern. Trompe l'oeil implies an optical and three-dimensional illusion while  Mural is a general reference to a painting done on a wall, which does not necessarily contain the elements of trompe l'oeil.
